He was the most brilliant student of his time at Cambridge University, and seemed destined for a successful political career. Instead, he founded a novel religious community at Little Gidding, where he and his brother and brother-in-law with their families lived together under a strict rule of work and prayer. Andrew was a follower of St John the Baptist, and according to the Gospel of John, the first of the apostles to be called by Jesus.
