Today we commemorate the martyr St. Stephen.
And now we give you thanks for the glorious pledge of the hope of our calling which you have given us in your saints; that, following their example and strengthened by their fellowship, we may run with perseverance the race that is set before us, and with them receive the unfading crown of glory.
Collect for today.
Heavenly Father,
You gave your martyr Saint Stephen, grace to pray for those who stoned him: grant that when we suffer for the truth, we may follow his example of forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Readings for today.
- 2 Chronicles 24:17-22
- Psalm 31:1-5
- Acts 6:8-10, 7:54-60
- Matthew 10:17-22
Jesus suffered for you, leaving you an example: that you should follow in his steps.
He committed no sin, no guile was found on his lips: when he was reviled he did not revile in return.
When he suffered, he did not threaten: but trusted in him who judges justly.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree: that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
By his wounds you have been healed: for you were straying like sheep.
But now you have returned: to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.
Glory to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning: is now and will be for ever.
Amen.
