Gospel Reflection 7 September 2021 Luke 6:12-19

Luke 6:12-19

12In those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the night in prayer to God. 13When daylight came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles: 14Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot; 16Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

17Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of His disciples was there, along with a great number of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon. 18They had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases, and those troubled by unclean spirits were healed. 19The entire crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was coming from Him and healing them all. ( Berean Bible)

The Calling of the Apostles.

Jesus had many disciples but the 12 were a significant group and Luke tells us that Jesus also designated them to be Apostles. Apostles in the Church have the role of building up the church through establishing communities of Faith. We confess to following the Apostolic teachings summed up in the Apostolic Creed.   We too are called to build a community of faith around us, and life up to what we believe in.

I believe in God, the Father almighty

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit

the holy catholic Church

the communion of saints

the forgiveness of sins

the resurrection of the body

and the life everlasting.

As you are reminded of what it is that we believe may God give you the strength to live up to what you believe.

Our Gospel texts today reminds us that Jesus has power to heal, mind body and soul. Today may we respond to the Call of Jesus to follow him, to uphold our faith and to pray God’s healing and wholeness over this hurting world.

There is power in the Name of Jesus. May that power be at work in our lives today –

As we are reminded that we live in the power of the Holy Spirit, that God is our strength and that we are members of this holy universal church and that the church is not just the people on earth but that through the communion of saints the church is the believers of all generations. Those who have gone before us have endured much to uphold the teachings of Jesus and live them out in their context, let that communion of saints, be your inspiration to serve God in your context today. Forgive as you are forgiven and love as you are loved. This faith that we have is not just for today but for all eternity, let us life today giving ourselves fully to revealing Christ to the world as our hope our healer and our salvation.

Let us pray

Father you called the 12 to be your Apostle and you call us too, by Name, to have faith in you. Keep us true to their teachings and increase our trust and hope in you, for you are the resurrection and the life, the healer of the world. We have received you and the forgiveness that you offer, help us to love the world back to you, in everything that we do today, for you live and reign with the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.
