Jesse Tree continued

10.         Solomon
Symbol: The crown.
1 Kings 3: 6-14   King Solomon was the son of David, he reigned in a time of peace and prosperity and he was able to build a magnificent temple. When Solomon first became King, he felt he lacked leadership skills so when God appeared to Solomon in a dream, he asked God to bless him with wisdom so he could rule his Father’s people wisely. God said because you have not asked for wealth, I will make you wealthy as well as wise and I will give you long life. Solomon’s story is a story of God’s blessing. Solomon is most revered for his wisdom and understanding heart, for everything that Solomon is remembered for were gifts from God.

11.         Mary
Symbol: Lily
Luke 1:26-33    Mary is Jesus’ closest ancestor. She was a very young woman when God sent the angel Gabriel to tell her that she was going to give birth to a son and that his name will be Jesus. She is one of our greatest models of accepting God’s plan for our lives. Mary said, “I am the Lord’s servant may it happen to me as you have said.” The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary. Your Son will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will make Him a King as His ancestor David, and He will be the king of the descendants of Jacob for ever; His kingdom will have no end.

12.         Joseph
Symbol: Hammer
Joseph was a carpenter and a descendant of King David  When he heard that Mary was pregnant, he was very unhappy. He decided to break off his engagement to Mary. But an angel appeared to him and told him not to be afraid and to take Mary as his wife. As the child she was carrying had been conceived by the Holy Spirit and would be called Jesus. Joseph did as the angel told him. We remember him for his obedience to God, for his wonderful example of fatherhood, and for the great care he took of Jesus as his earthly father.

13.        John the Baptist
Symbol: shell and Water
Mark:1 2-8   John wore clothes made out of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.  John the Baptist who is one of the last great prophets, he came to prepare the way for Jesus. He told everyone that someone more powerful was coming after him. He said “I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. He came to announce Jesus as the Messiah.

  14.        Our Hearts
Symbol: Red Heart
To remind us that we are God’s children. Brothers and sisters in Christ. We are members of Christ’s family through our baptism.

15.         Jesus
Symbol: Star
John 1: 5   Jesus is the light of the world. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never been overcome!”   As we journey through Advent, we should feel encouraged by the story of the Jesse Tree because it shows God’s grace working in people’s lives. In spite of our human failure and weakness we can renew our hope in God’s presence because we are no different from the people of the Bible. God has promised that His love will be with us to the end of time.
