Prayers for Human Rights Day

Prayer for Justice and Peace.

Righteous Father, your Son will come to be our judge: break down the barriers that divide us and disperse our suspicions and hatred, that we may practice justice with mercy and live together in your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for those who have authority, influence or power.

Almighty Father, you have given all authority to your beloved Son: govern the hearts and minds, of all who have influence and power and bring the peoples of the earth, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to the justice and peace of his kingdom; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Holy Innocents

The Collect

Heavenly Father,

children suffered at the hands of Herod, though they had done no wrong: give us grace not to be indifferent, in the face of cruelty or oppression, but to defend the weak from the tyranny of the strong; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

The Readings

  • Baruch 4:21-23
  • Or Jeremiah 31:15-17
  • Psalm 124
  • 1 Peter 4:13-18

And now we give you thanks, because today you have gathered us together at this Eucharist feast, so that we may be renewed in love, joy and peace.

Canticle 12

Christ has died, Christ is risen: Christ the Lord will come again.

If we have died with Him, we shall also live with Him: if we endure, we shall also reign with Him.

If we deny Him, He will also deny us: if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

Christ has died, Christ is risen: Christ the Lord will come again.

Glory to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning: is now and will be forever.

Amen.

Commemoration of St John

The collect.

Merciful Lord,

you have enlightened your Church by the teaching of Saint John: shed your bright beams of light upon us, that we may walk in the light of your truth and finally come to your eternal splendour; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

The readings.

  • Isaiah 6:1-8
  • Psalm 97
  • 1 John 1
  • John 21:20-24

And now we give you thanks because you sent him to be the great shepherd of your flock; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always to the end of time.

A song of Love.

Christians, let us love one another: because love comes from God. The one who loves is born of God and knows him: but one who does not love, does not know God. Love does not insist on his way, it is not quick to take offense: it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love is patient and kind: love is not jealous or boastful, it is not arrogant or rude. Love bears all things and believes all things: love hopes and endures all things. Love will never come to an end: but prophecy will vanish, tongues cease and knowledge pass away. For our knowledge and our prophecy are both imperfect: but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. Now I know in part: but then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. There are three things that last forever, faith, hope and love: but the greatest of these is love.

Glory to the Father and to the son: and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning: is now and will be forever.

Amen

Commemoration of St Stephen

Today we commemorate the martyr St. Stephen.

And now we give you thanks for the glorious pledge of the hope of our calling which you have given us in your saints; that, following their example and strengthened by their fellowship, we may run with perseverance the race that is set before us, and with them receive the unfading crown of glory.

Collect for today.

Heavenly Father,

You gave your martyr Saint Stephen, grace to pray for those who stoned him: grant that when we suffer for the truth, we may follow his example of forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Readings for today.

  • 2 Chronicles 24:17-22
  • Psalm 31:1-5
  • Acts 6:8-10, 7:54-60
  • Matthew 10:17-22

Jesus suffered for you, leaving you an example: that you should follow in his steps.

He committed no sin, no guile was found on his lips: when he was reviled he did not revile in return.

When he suffered, he did not threaten: but trusted in him who judges justly.

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree: that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.

By his wounds you have been healed: for you were straying like sheep.

But now you have returned: to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Glory to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning: is now and will be for ever.

Amen.
