Nicholas Ferrar Deacon and Religious 1637

Collect:

God our Father,
you inspired Nicholas Ferrar with your love
To accept your calling
And become a burning and shining light
In your Church:
Grant that we too may be on fire
With the same spirit of discipline and love;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

He was the most brilliant student of his time at Cambridge University, and seemed destined for a successful political career. Instead, he founded a novel religious community at Little Gidding, where he and his brother and brother-in-law with their families lived together under a strict rule of work and prayer. After his death the community was broken up by the Puritans who saw int it an attempt to bring back Roman Catholicism to England. – Sourced from Saints and Seasons.

St Andrew the Apostle

Collect

Lord God
by your grace the apostle Saint Andrew
obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ
and followed him without delay;
grant that we may offer ourselves to you
in joyful obedience;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Andrew was a follower of St John the Baptist, and according to the Gospel of John, the first of the apostles to be called by Jesus. He is mentioned several times in the Gospels; and because in three incidents he brings other people to Christ, St Andrews tide is often observed as a special time of intercession for mission. He has also long been regarded as the patron saint of Scotland. – Sourced from Saints and Seasons – Anglican Church of Southern Africa.
